Harvey Carignan had previously been found guilty of a 1949 rape and murder he had carried out in Anchorage, Alaska, while enlisting in the American Army. On May 18, 1927, a 20-year-old single woman gave birth to Harvey in North Dakota.
After visiting his aunt and uncle in North Dakota and Minnesota, Carignan returned to live with his mother when he was ten years old.
Harvey struggled academically because a female professor had sexually assaulted him while he was a student. He completed his studies at the reform school when he was 18 years old and joined the American Army.
