A shooting incident occurred in Holyoke, Massachusetts on Wednesday afternoon, as confirmed by police officials.
Holyoke police were called to the 100 block of Sargeant Street just before 12:40 p.m. due to a reported shooting. Authorities said that a three-man fight turned violent, topping in a shooting.
Tragically, a bullet struck a bus carrying passengers, including a pregnant woman. The expectant mother was quickly transferred in critical condition to a nearby hospital. Authorities from the Hampden District Attorney’s Office revealed that her child, who was delivered in severe condition, did not survive despite the heroic efforts of the medical staff.
Prior to this, Holyoke police said that the incident involved multiple shooting victims. The district attorney’s office has since released information that makes it clear that the other victims of the altercation were probably involved as suspects.
According to the district attorney’s office, all suspects have been identified or may have been identified. These suspects are currently being held in jail after being transported to local hospitals.
According to MSP spokesperson David Procopio, patrols, K9 teams, and investigative units were dispatched by the Massachusetts State Police (MSP) to assist with the investigation and the hunt for suspects. The State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Hampden District Attorney’s Office and the Holyoke police are both still looking into the shooting event.
Monica Tibbits-Nutt, acting secretary and chief executive officer of the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, in a statement, said, “There are no words that could be sufficient in the face of what happened today to people in the Holyoke community, including innocent bystanders on a regional transit authority bus. Our thoughts are with them. And so are our hearts and our sorrow. Our prayers go out to everyone who has been, and will continue to be, affected by this senseless act of violence.”
