The architect of Repubblica was 98 years old. He was the first director-manager of Italian publishing and the creator of L’Espresso and Repubblica.

After growing up in Sanremo and attending high school there with Italo Calvino, he began writing in a number of fascist publications but was ultimately expelled because he was perceived as an attacker.

Early in the 1950s, he began with Pannunzio’s World and Arrigo Benedetti’s European.

In 1955, he and the latter co-founded L’Espresso, the country’s first investigative weekly.

Scalfari works there in two capacities: as the administrative director and as a collaborator for economics.

He also becomes the first Italian director-manager, a position that was at the time completely unheard of in Italy, when Benedetti transfers the reins to him in 1962.

With a brief eulogy and a moment of silence in the Senate Chamber, President Elisabetta Casellati remembered the journalist and former lawmaker Eugenio Scalfari, who passed away this morning.
