Only one other African head of state, Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo of Equatorial Guinea, who took office less than two months before dos Santos, had a lengthier tenure.

Avelino Eduardo dos Santos and Jacinta José Paulino are the parents of Eduardo dos Santos. He was born in the current Sambizanga area of Luanda.

Dos Santos passed away on July 8, 2022, at the age of 79, at the Teknon Medical Center in Barcelona. He received cancer treatment for a number of years until he passed away after suffering a “cardiorespiratory arrest” on June 23 of that year.

He passed away in Spain, where he was receiving medical attention after a heart attack.

Dos Santos, whose fans dubbed him the “architect of peace,” will be remembered for putting an end to a protracted civil war in the early 2000s.
