Tito Puente was a Puerto Rican-American musician, songwriter, bandleader, and record producer who lived in the United States. Tito Puente won the Billboard Latin Music Lifetime Achievement Award in 1995.
Tito Puente had the rare distinction of having both a special session of the Senate of Puerto Rico devoted to him and being permitted to play in his distinctive style on the Senate floor while it was in session during the presidency of Sen. Roberto Rexach Bentez.
At a ceremony officiated by Rep. Jose Serrano and House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Charles Rangel, the US Post Office in Spanish Harlem was dedicated in Puente’s honour on September 10, 2007.

Tito Puente experienced a severe heart attack after performing in Puerto Rico on May 31, 2000. Tito Puente was transferred to New York City for heart valve surgery, but complications led to his death on June 1, 2000, in New York City, the U.S. at 2:27 a.m. The Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award was given to him in 2003 after his passing.
