On 21 October 1966, children and adults were killed when a colliery spoil tip on a hill above the Welsh community of Aberfan in Merthyr Tydfil fell. In a matter of minutes, more than 1.4 million cubic feet (40,000 cubic meters) of debris buried a portion of the community. The classrooms of Pantglas Junior School were quickly flooded; young students and staff perished due to suffocation or impact.

How many children were buried together in Aberfan?

The first casualties from the wreckage of the school arrived at St. Tydfil’s Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil at 9:50 a.m., and the rest of the injured people who had been rescued got there before 11:00 a.m. There were 22 children and 5 adults among the casualties who were brought in, but one of the children was already deceased when they were brought in.

The East Glamorgan General Hospital received an additional nine victims who were injured in the attack. After eleven in the morning, there were no survivors to be located. 116 children, most of whom were between the ages of 7 and 10, were among the 144 persons who died as a result of the tragedy. All the 116 children who died were buried together.
