At the age of 6, she started modelling for commercials and catalogues. When she was 12 years old, she signed with Alfa Model Management. She started homeschooling at the age of 14. For her career, she travelled back and forth between Cape Town, where she attended the Waterfront Theatre School, and places like Tokyo, New York, and London.
Dean and fellow model Ashton Schnehage escaped a vehicle accident in October 2008. She sustained four fractured ribs, a collapsed lung, and a shattered wrist.
She underwent life-saving surgery at Milnerton Medi-Clinic while in the hospital, and she later wore the scars on her body to an AMI Alexandre Mattiussi fashion show. After the accident, she decided to take a hiatus from her profession.
