Dean was raised by his parents, Joanne Muller and Johan Kriek, in Cape Town, where he was born. Her brother was Alex. She began modelling for commercials and catalogues when she was just 6 years old. Alfa Model Management signed her when she was 12 years old. She began homeschooling when she was fourteen years old. She frequently travelled between Cape Town, where she attended the Waterfront Theatre School and cities like Tokyo, New York, and London for her work.

Charlbi’s most well-known works include the Spud films (2010–2013), the superhero drama Black Lightning (2018), and the Palme d’Or–winning Triangle of Sadness (2022). Dean was engaged to Luke Volker, another South African model.

On August 29, 2022, Dean was taken to a hospital in New York City after feeling ill. Although she initially only experienced mild symptoms, her condition gradually deteriorated, and she went tragically a short time later at the age of 32. The particular cause of death is still unknown pending the results of the autopsy, however, it was found that she had a viral infection in her lungs. Her spleen was removed during the 2008 car accident, which increases the risk of potentially fatal infections.

South African actress Charlbi Dean died suddenly at the age of 32. A statement from her agent stated that the actress and model passed away on Tuesday as a consequence of an “unexpected, untimely illness.” In a hospital in New York, Dean passed away. Her cause of death is still a mystery.
