Gil was the recipient of a FAMAS Award, the Ani ng Dangal Award from the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, and the Best Supporting Actress Hall of Fame Award from the Metro Manila Film Festival. Cherie Gil was awarded Best Actress honors at the ASEAN International Film Awards in 2015. Her other award came from the 2015 Madrid International Film Festival, where Cherie Gil took home the title of Best Lead Actress in a Foreign Language Film. Cherie Gil won the Best Supporting Actress prize at the 42nd Gawad Urian Awards in 2019 for her performance as Patricia Medina in the motion picture Citizen Jake.

At the age of 9, Cherie Gil began her career as a child actress. Cherie Gil is well known for her performance as Lavinia Arguelles in Bituing Walang Ningning (1985), in which she delivered the famous statement to Sharon Cuneta’s character Dorina Pineda: “You’re nothing but a second-rate, trying hard copycat!”
