Through their dads, Prince George, Duke of Kent, and King George VI, he is a first cousin to Queen Elizabeth II. Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark, Edward’s mother, was also a first cousin of the Queen’s husband, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, making him both a second cousin and first cousin.

Since the death of his father in a plane crash in 1942, Prince Edward has held the title of Duke of Kent for nearly 80 years, since he was six years old.

On behalf of the Queen, Edward attends engagements.

He served as President of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, where he presented the trophies to the Wimbledon champion and runner-up, and as the United Kingdom’s Special Representative for International Trade and Investment before retiring in 2001.

He has served as president of The Scout Association, the Royal United Services Institute, and the Royal Institution of Great Britain, as well as Grand Master of the United Grand Lodge of England since 1967.

His charitable work focuses on war remembrance, technology, and the development of British business.
