Martínez started his career at Newell’s Old Boys before joining Defensa y Justicia in 2017 initially on loan.
He had youth spells with Club Urquiza (Gualeguay, Entre Rios), Club Libertad (Gualeguay, Entre Rios) and Newell’s old boys.
He made his professional debut for Newell’s Old boys in the club’s final fixture of the 2016/17 season. He played the full match where his side lost to Godboy Cruz.
On 17 May 2019, Defensa y Justicia then announced that a deal had been agreed with Eridivise team Ajax which was subject to the passing of a medical. On the Eridivise side, Ajax paid the Argentine side an amount of €7m for the transfer of Martínez. Ajax later announced the completion of Martinez’s medical on 20 May 2019.
The transfer finally went through on 1 July 2019. He signed a four-year contract, with the option of a further year with Ajax until he joined Manchester in 2022.
