Shlomo Carlebach, also known as Reb Shlomo to his followers, was a rabbi, religious teacher, spiritual leader, composer, and singer known as “the singing rabbi” during his lifetime.

He was born on January 14, 1925.

Despite having his roots in traditional Orthodox yeshivot, he moved out to develop his own style, which incorporated Hasidic Judaism, warmth and personal interaction, open concerts, and song-filled synagogue services.

He formerly resided in Manhattan, San Francisco, Toronto, and Mevo Modi’im, an Israeli moshav that he created. The 2013 Broadway premiere of the musical Soul Doctor has Carlebach as its central character.

Many people believe that Carlebach is the greatest Jewish religious songwriter of the 20th century.

By using his own brand of enlightened teaching, as well as his melodies, lyrics, and extraordinarily uplifting storytelling, Carlebach was also regarded as a pioneer of the Baal teshuva movement (“returnees to Judaism”), which inspired disillusioned Jewish youngsters to re-embrace their heritage.

Numerous allegations of sexual abuse against him were made after his passing and were printed in Lilith Magazine.
