His father, Hartwig Naftali Carlebach (1889–1967), was an Orthodox rabbi, and he was born there in 1925. He has a sister named Shulamith Levovitz and a twin brother named Rabbi Eli Chaim Carlebach.

In 1931, his family emigrated from Germany to Baden Bei Wien, Austria, and by 1933, Switzerland.

He wed teacher Elaine Neila Glick in 1972. Neshama and Nedara, their two daughters, were born to them.

She performed with her late father, Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach when she was a teenager. Rabbi Menachem Creditor, Neshama’s spouse, and their five kids all reside in New York.
