Emmett Louis Till was born in Chicago in 1941, and after his father died when he was four years old, his mother raised him by herself. His health was quite bad at the time and he stutters and has polio.
However, Emmett finally made a full recovery and improved well by the time he was a young adolescent. Till was visiting family in a small Mississippi village in the summer of 1955.
Carolyn Bryant reports that Till once approached her and insulted her in front of other people.
A few days later, Bryant’s husband and half-brother abducted the child and tortured him in a barn.
He was killed by having one of his eyeballs removed, and then his body was tossed into the River Tallahatchie.
