Sometimes, regular old Stone just does not cut it for the aesthetic you are seeking. The good news is that Stonecutters in Minecraft do cut it, it being any kind of stone block that you want to transform into a Wall, Slab, or Step.

Figuring out how to find a Stonecutter and work it can be difficult, though. So this guide will simplify the steps for acquiring and interacting with your Stonecutter.

Required Items for a Stonecutter

To obtain a Stonecutter, you will need:

  1. Crafting Table
  2. Pickaxe
  3. Iron Ingot
  4. Three Stone
  5. Furnace & Fuel

Stonecutters are a relatively easy item to obtain in Minecraft, especially for such a useful device. There are two ways of getting a Stonecutter: the first is to steal one from a Village or you can go the harder route and craft one of your own.

Given that Stonecutters are only really necessary for aesthetic projects—not as progression toward The End or setting up your first base—you will probably have the materials needed to create one on hand by the time you want to make a Stonecutter. If not, stealing one from a Village is super easy.

All you need to collect a Stonecutter from a Village is any kind of Pickaxe. Here’s a brief how-to article on Pickaxes, if you require more information on them.

If you are opposed to thievery, crafting a Stonecutter of your own is no great problem. All you need is an Iron Ingot and three stones.

Depending on if you are playing the Bedrock or Java versions of Minecraft, the kind of stone you need will vary. In Java, the three stones must be Stone blocks while in Bedrock any three of these blocks in any combination will suffice:

  1. Andesite
  2. Polished Andesite
  3. Diorite
  4. Polished Diorite
  5. Polished Granite
  6. Granite
  7. Stone

For simplicity’s sake, we will focus on Stone and there are two simple ways to get Stone blocks. You could enchant a Pickaxe with Silk Touch and mine some Stone. Otherwise, you could mine Stone to harvest Cobblestone, and then smelt the Cobblestone in a Furnace.

If you do not have a Furnace, see this article about how to make your own. To fuel the Furnace, mine some Coal ore with any Pickaxe.

Once you have three blocks of Stone, all you will need to complete your Stonecutter is an Iron Ingot. For more information on how to get an ingot, have a look at this article.

The Stonecutter is a relatively simple machine that makes your redesign projects much simpler. Basically, the Stonecutter can take one block of any variety of rock and turn it into a Slab, Step, Wall, etc. of the same type of rock.
