In 1976, Chaleo Yoovidhya introduced Krating Daeng, sometimes known as “red gaur” in English, to Thailand.

It was inspired by the Thai truck drivers’ and workers’ favorite tonic, Lipovitan, whose main constituent is taurine. When Dietrich Mateschitz visited Thailand in 1982, he noticed that Krating Daeng helped him recover from jet lag. Mateschitz co-founded Red Bull GmbH with Yoovidhya in 1984 and helped it become a global brand. Red Bull was formed by each partner putting $500,000 of their funds into the new firm and obtaining a share in it. Yoovidhya and Mateschitz both owned 49% of the new corporation.

They handed Yoovidhya’s son Chalerm the remaining 2%, but it was decided that Mateschitz would head the firm. In 1987, the product was introduced in Austria.

In 1992, the product was introduced to international markets, including Hungary and Slovenia. It made its way into the United States through California in 1997 and the Middle East in 2000. Chaleo and Mateschitz were both rated as the 250th richest individuals in the world by Forbes magazine in 2008, with an approximate net worth of $4 billion.

Excessive consumption of energy drinks like Red Bull, especially in younger individuals, has been related to irregular cardiac rhythm, heart attacks, and – in very rare circumstances — death. Energy drinks include a lot of sugar, which is linked to type 2 diabetes, obesity, and dental issues.
