Goram, who was born in Edinburgh and played professionally for Leith Athletic, Hibernian, Third Lanark, and Bury in the 1940s and 1950s, was raised in England but identified as Scottish as a child.

During his many trips to Belfast in the late 1990s, Goram was charged with harbouring sympathy for Ulster loyalists.

His ex-wife Tracey accused him of associating with the Ulster Volunteer Force and amassing loyalist paraphernalia.

He refuted the allegations, asserted his support for the peace process in Northern Ireland, and vowed to take his accusers to court. He was charged with having ties to the loyalist.

Goram began his career with West Bromwich Albion, but they released him when he was a youngster.

Later, in 1981, he relocated to England and joined Oldham Athletic, where he played in 195 league games over the course of almost seven years.

Due to his efforts, he was selected for the PFA Team of the Year for the English Second Division in 1986–1987.
