Ash Carter was the 25th Secretary of Defense, serving from February 17, 2015, to January 20, 2017. Before then, he was the Deputy Secretary of Defense from October 6, 2011, to December 4, 2013.
Ash Carter was also an academic who worked at Havard Kennedy School as the director of the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs. Carter also served as a co-director of the Preventive Defense Project at Harvard University and Stanford University.
