At the 1956 Summer Olympics, basketball made its fourth appearance as a sanctioned Olympic medal event. The competition had 174 competitors from fifteen countries, which is a rather small amount for the basketball event. In all, 56 basketball contests were played.

After participating for 19 years, Carlos Samuel Blixen Abella, an athlete from Uruguay, made his Olympic basketball debut. On December 27, 1936, Carlos was born in Montevideo, Uruguay. In Melbourne, Australia, at the 1956 Summer Olympics, he and the men’s national team won the bronze medal. Four years later, he took part in the Olympics once more. At the age of 23, Carlos Samuel Blixen Abella competed in his last Olympics in Roma in 1960.

Carlos Samuel Blixen was assigned to group c, which included Uruguay, on the list of squads for each of the 15 teams that competed in the men’s basketball competition at the 1956 Summer Olympics. He ceased playing basketball before his death on August 1st, 2022.
