Daughter of a Scottish clan chief and modern singer-songwriter Charlotte Gordon Cumming was born on 2 February 1958 in Scotland. She was the author of the Sugababes song “Soul Sound,” a 2001 MTV Best European Single Award nominee. The song was recorded by Cumming for her album Mind walking in 2005 and covered by Indonesian singer Joy Tobing for her album Rise.

Cumming has established her own contemporary fusion of Celtic melodies and African rhythms, though she is influenced by musicians like Paul Simon, Peter Gabriel, and Sinéad O’Connor.
She was wed to The Horse Whisperer author Nicholas Evans, a novelist, until his passing in August 2022.

When visiting her brother’s estate in Scotland in September 2008, Cumming, her husband, her brother, and her sister-in-law consumed toxic Cortinarius speciosissimus mushrooms that had been mistakenly classified as delectable. As a result, several people in the group had kidney failure. Prior to receiving a kidney transplant in 2012, Cumming continued to receive kidney dialysis while investigating alternative medical treatments.
