Mary Elizabeth Alexander Hanford Dole is an American attorney, author and politician. She served under Johnson, Nixon, Reagan and Bush administrations. She also served as the United States Senator for North Carolina from 2003 to 2009 and was the wife of Senator Bob Dole.

Elizabeth was born on July 29, 1936, in North Carolina.

Dole graduated with a degree in Political Science from Duke University in 1958. She got her Doctor of Law from Harvard Law School in 1965.

She was appointed a staff assistant to the Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare during President Johnson’s term.

She is one of the few politicians that have served under a Democrat and Republican President.

In 2000, Dole ran for the Republican nomination in the 2000 presidential election. In August, Dole placed third behind George W. Bush; she withdrew from the race in October 1999. In 2003, she contested for the US Senate.

She defeated her Democratic opponent Erskine Bowles.

Elizabeth Dole is still alive although there was a bit of confusion about her death when Senator Dole, her husband died in 2021. She has retired from politics and is taking things slowly as she should for an 85-year-old woman.
