Winter was found in the nets of a crab trap on December 10, 2005 near the coast of Florida. The net was trapped tightly on two months old Winter that it stopped the supply of blood to her tail which led to amputation. A team of prosthetists worked for 18 months to design a simple silicone and plastic tail in 2007.
Winter easily became famous and the most popular attraction at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium because she inspired physically impaired individuals with her positive energy. Soon she was the subject of children’s books like Winter’s Tail: How One Little Dolphin Learned to Swim Again.
Winter starred as herself in the film, Dolphin Tale and its 2014 sequel, Dolphin Tale 2.

On November 7, 2021, it was announced that Winter had shown signs of a gastrointestinal infection. Winter died 4 days later at the age of 16 years.
