Nicknamed “The Voice”, Whitney Houston was in a class of her own. This songstress and actress was best known for some of the greatest songs like “I Will Always Love You” and “Where Do Broken Hearts Go”. With 6 Grammy awards and over 200 million record sales, she can easily be called one of the best-selling music artists of all time.

Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born on August 9, 1963 to gospel singer Emily “Cissy” (Drinkard) Houston. Young Whitney started performing at her church choir where she also learnt to play the piano. By the age of 16, she was already singing backup for the likes of Chaka Khan and Lou Rawls. She got the attention of music executive Clive Davies, and he soon signed her to Arista Records.

By 1985, Whitney debuted her first album, “You Give Good Love” and it peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. She soon gained international recognition with hits like “How Will I Know”, “The Greatest Love of All” and “I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)”.

Whitney made her acting debut starring alongside Kelvin Costner in the 1992 successful film, The Bodyguard. She also starred in Waiting to Exhale, The Preacher’s Wife and Sparkle.

On February 11, 2012, she was found unconscious at the Beverly Hilton, submerged in the bathtub and declared dead 20 minutes later. Over 200 million viewers tuned in to bid the Queen of Pop goodbye at a memorial service held on February 18, 2012.
