Jones has often credited his English teacher as the one who encouraged him to write poetry. He initially wanted to be a doctor but changed his mind and studied Theatre and Dance at University of Michigan School of Music.
He started acting in 1955, in Shakespeare’s Othello. He acted in several Shakespearian plays. By 1967, he starred in the play The Great White Hope and won the the1969 Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play.
James starred in several box office successes like Star Wars: A New Hope. Return of the Jedi, Conan the Barbarian, fan favorite Coming to America and Lion King.
