Pérez, who was born in Puerto Rico on June 9, 1954, began his career at Marvel Comics in the early 1970s, pencilling backup tales for books like Astonishing Tales and Deadly Hands of Kung-Fu, where he and writer Bill Mantlo co-created the Puerto Rican superhero White Tiger to honour their shared heritage.

He soon advanced to become the Avengers regular’s artist for more than 20 issues, co-creating the Taskmaster and illustrating a portion of the ‘Korvac Saga’ tale, one of Pérez’s first significant plotlines.

Pérez moved to DC where he took over pencilling duties for Justice League of America after the passing of longtime JLA artist Dick Dillin. Pérez previously worked at Marvel on the Fantastic Four and Inhumans.

From there, Pérez joined writer Marv Wolfman as the artist on New Youthful Titans, reimagining the teen squad and creating one of the most well-known comics of its time.

Pérez created the initial Nightwing costume during his tenure on Teen Titans, which is likely the most well-known of the bizarre, intricate costumes he came to be known for.
