Born Melvin Kaminsky on June 28, 1926, in Brooklyn. Mel made up his mind to be a performer after watching a show on Broadway.
Mel started his career working as a writer for comedians. He worked with Sid Caesar on Caesar’s Hour from 1954 to 1957. In 1960, Mel worked with fellow writer Carl Reiner and began performing the “2000 Year Old Man” act on The Steve Allen Show.
Mel made his directorial debut with the movie The Producers in 1968, he won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for the film in 1969.
Mel went on to direct some high-grossing films like Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein.
In the 2000s, Mel worked on several animated films like Spaceballs: The Animated Series, Mr. Peabody & Sherman and Hotel Transylvania 2 & 3.
