Orenthal James Simpson was born July 9, 1947, in San Francisco. His father was a well-known drag queen who came out as gay but died in 1986 from AIDS. He played football for his high school, Galileo High School.
Simpson started his career with the Buffalo Bills in 1968 but struggled for three years. He did well in 1972 and in 1973, he was the first player to break the 2,000-yard rushing mark. He won the 1973 NFL MVP Award and Bert Bell Award. OJ was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1985.
On June 17, 1993, was arrested in a widely publicized event as he was chased by LAPD. He was tried for the murder of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman.
The trial was aired live and was called Trial of the Century for international interest. On October 3 1995, OJ was found not guilty by a jury of his peers, this was watched by over 100 million viewers.
However, he was found liable for the wrongful death of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman in a civil trial and was ordered to pay the families $33million.
