Janet Jackson is an American singer, songwriter and actress. She is known for her innovative and elaborate stage performance. Janet Damita Jo Jackson was born on May 16, 1966 in a two bedroom house on Jackson Street, Indiana. She started performing at a young age with her siblings known as the Jackson 5. At age of 7, she had started acting on variety show The Jacksons. She went on to star in the sitcom Good Times and Diff’rent Strokes.

In 1982, Janet released her first solo album, “Janet Jackson” with A&M Records. “Control” was her third album and it was a major hit; it sold 10 million copies worldwide. By the end of the 1980s, Janet was an accomplished superstar with her unique sound.

Janet went back to acting in 2000 with movies like Nutty Professor II: The Klumps. Janet performed in 2004 Super Bowl XXXVIII halftime show with another singer Justin Timberlake but while performing Justin tore open her costume, exposing her right breast to 140 million viewers. Following the incident, Janet was banned by CBS network from attending the Grammy Award ceremony. Her film deals with ABC and Disney were canceled, and her album was blacklisted by MTV.

Janet Jackson is alive, active and performing. In November 2021, there was a documentary Malfunction: The Dressing Down of Janet Jackson, that looked at how Janet was the one who seemed to shoulder the blame after the 2004 Super Bowl incident. Janet has influenced a wide generation of singers from Jennifer Lopez to Britney Spears.
