He was known to frequent Studio 54 with his celebrity friends like Liza Minnelli.
Halston was born on April 23, 1932. He learnt how to sew from his grandmother and he made hats and alter dresses for his mother and sisters.
He dropped out of university and moved to Chicago to attend the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. By 1957, Halston had opened his first hat shop at the Boulevard Salon.
Halston achieved great fame after designing the pillbox hat worn by Jacqueline Kennedy to her husband’s presidential inauguration in 1961. When hats dropped out of fashion, he opened his boutique on Madison Avenue in 1968.
His clients were top Hollywood actresses like Elizabeth Taylor.
Halston was asked by the U.S. Olympic Committee to design the Pan American Games and U.S. Olympic Team’s uniforms in 1976.
He also designed the uniforms for the Girl Scouts, the New York Police Department, and the Avis Rent a Car System.

In 1988, Halston was diagnosed with HIV, he moved to San Francisco to be cared for by his family. On March 26, 1990, he died from AIDS complications at the California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco.
