Norman Milton Lear (born July 27, 1922) is an American television scriptwriter, film and television producer, and creator of over 100 episodes. Lear is most known for the multi-award-winning 1970s comedy All in the Family, as well as Maude, Sanford and Son, One Day at a Time, The Jeffersons, and Good Times.

Lear has continued to create television, including the 2017 adaptation of One Day at a Time and the Netflix revival of Good Times in 2022. Lear has won several honors, including five Emmys, the National Medal of Arts, and the Kennedy Center Honors.

Lear is also known for his political activism and support for liberal and progressive groups and politicians. In 1980, he founded the advocacy group People for the American Way to fight the Christian right’s political supremacy, and in the early 2000s, he performed a tour carrying a copy of the Declaration of Independence.
