Norman Milton Lear (born July 27, 1922) is an American television scriptwriter, film and television producer, and creator of over 100 episodes.
Lear is most known for the multi-award-winning 1970s sitcom All in the Family, as well as Maude, Sanford and Son, One Day at a Time, The Jeffersons, and Good Times. Lear has continued to produce television, most recently the 2017 remake of One Day at a Time and the 2022 Netflix revival of Good Times.
Many honours have been bestowed upon Lear, including five Emmys, the National Medal of Arts, and the Kennedy Center Honors. Lear is in the Television Academy Hall of Fame.
Lear is also well-known for his political engagement and financial support for liberal and progressive organizations and leaders.
To fight the influence of the Christian right in politics, he created the advocacy organization People for the American Way in 1980, and in the early 2000s, he launched a tour carrying a copy of the Declaration of Independence.
