John Joseph Gotti Jr. was an American gangster and boss of the Gambino crime family in New York City. He was known as for his flamboyant dress sense and was nicknamed “The Teflon Don” or “The Dapper Don”.

Gotti was born in the Bronx borough of New York, he grew up in poverty and resolved to a life of crime early. He dropped out of school at 16 to work with the Mafia associated with the Fulton Rockaway Boys gang. Gotti was mentored by Gambino underboss Aniello “Neil” Dellacroce, he quickly grew in ranks because he was loyal and ruthless.

It is believed Gotti assisted in the largest unrecovered cash robbery in history, the infamous Lufthansa Heist. In 1985, Gotti ordered the murder of Gambino boss Paul Castellano and took over the crime family. He became the boss of America’s most powerful crime syndicate.

In 1992, Gotti was convicted of five murders and received life in prison without parole.

Is John Gotti Still Alive or Dead?

John Gotti served his term at United States Penitentiary, Marion. In 1998, Gotti was diagnosed with throat cancer, he underwent surgery but the tumor returned two years later.

Gotti’s health declined and he died on June 10, 2002, at the age of 61.
