Leonid Aronovich Shvartsman is a visual artist and animator from Belarus and the Soviet Union.

Throughout most of his artistic career at the Soyuzmultfilm studio in Moscow, Shvartsman served as the art director on a number of cartoons, including Cheburashka, 38 Parrots, The Golden Antelope, The Scarlet Flower, and The Snow Queen.

Shvartsman was born in the historic Minsk, BSSR, and nurtured in a devout Yiddish-speaking family.

His father was a brick industry accountant who suddenly went away while Shvartsman was only 13 years old.

After his maternal grandparents immigrated to the US in 1924, Shvartsman’s family was left in debt, forcing him to search for his siblings.

The Russian artist died in his 101st year.
