Maggie Smith was born on 28 December 1934 in Essex. She dropped out of school to join the Oxford Playhouse at 16 years old. She made her acting debut on stage in 1952. She went on to act in other Shakespearean plays.
Smith tried her feet in television in 1970, appearing on the Carol Burnett Show. In 2007, she appeared on HBO television movie, Capturing Mary and in 2010, she got the role of Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess of Grantham, in the British period drama Downton Abbey.
