Joaquín Archivaldo Guzmán Loera was born on April 4, 1957 in the rural community of La Tuna, Sinaloa, Mexico. He was nicknamed El Chapo meaning ‘Shorty’ in Mexican Spanish due to his 5foot 6inches stature. His family was very poor so he could not go to school but sold oranges as a child.
El Chapo started working for drug syndicates in the 1970s, he earned a reputation of being ruthless and ambitious and this made him grow in ranks. By 1989, Guzman was in charge of smuggling drugs to Tecate, Baja California, Mexicali and San Luis Río Colorado.
His drug empire made him a billionaire, and he was ranked the 10th richest man in Mexico and 1,140th in the world in 2011, with a net worth of roughly US$1 billion
Guzman has been arrested several times and he escaped from prison in 2001 and 2015. He was finally rearrested in 2016 and extradited to the US in 2017.

In February 2019 El Chapo was convicted and sentenced to life in prison plus 30 years and ordered to forfeit more than $12.6 billion.
El Chapo is alive and currently serving his life term at ADX Florence, the most secure US supermax prison.
