Nicholson was born on April 22, 1937. In 1974, he was informed by Time magazine researchers that his oldest sister is actually his mother and his parents were truly his grandparents. His mother was a teenage mother, unmarried, his grandparents decided to raise Nicholson as their own.
This prolific actor made his film debut in the low budget drama The Cry Baby Killer in 1958. His first box office hit was Easy Rider, grossing over $40 million. One of his most significant roles was an adaptation of Stephen King’s The Shining in 1980. In 1983, he won his second Academy Award for his role in Terms of Endearment.
Nicholson has been nominated eight times and won Academy Awards three times. He has been described as “the most skilled actor of our lifetime” by Ruth Simmons.
