Is Don Matera still alive?

Don Mattera, born Donata Francisco Mattera, was a poet, author and political activist from Western Native Township, present-day Westbury, South Africa in the year 1935.

When Don Mattera was very young, his grandparents adopted and sent him to a Catholic boarding school in Durban.

When he was fourteen years, he came back to Johannesburg where he attended a school in Pageview. Pageview also suffered under apartheid which made him become a political enthusiast and one who vociferously spoke against the apartheid.

Don Mattera began working as a journalist and worked for The Sunday Times, The Sowetan and the Weekly Mail which presently is known as the Mail and Guardian.

In the 1970s, Mattera converted to be a Muslim who later became very staunch in the Islamic faith.

Is Don Mattera still alive?

Don Mattera is no longer alive. He died on 18 July 2022 in Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa. He was presumed to be 86 or 87 years at the time of his death.

Mattera was buried the same day as the Islam faith demands.
