Rosa Louise McCauley Parks was an American activist in the civil rights movement. She made her mark when she rejected a white bus driver’s order to vacate a row of four seats in the “colored” section in favor of a White passenger.

Rosa Parks was born February 4, 1913 in Alabama. Parks became active in the civil rights movement in 1943, when she was elected secretary of the Montgomery chapter of the NAACP. She was an anti-rape activist and member of the League of Women Voters.

On December 1, 1955, Parks boarded a bus and sat on the first row of back seats reserved for Blacks.

At the third bus top, more Whites boarded the bus but were forced to stand because the seats were filled. The driver demanded Park and three others leave their seats for the White passengers.

The three other Black passengers stood up but Park refused to stand up for the White passengers and was subsequently arrested.
