Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev is a Russian and former Soviet politician. He is remembered for unifying Germany and ending the cold war between the Soviet Union and the United States.

Although he is a subject of controversy for some people who blame him for the end of the Soviet Union and for leaning more toward the West.

Gorbachev was born on 2 March 1931 during Joseph Stalin’s term and it was a difficult time for the country. Gorbachev’s family was affected by the famine of 1932–1933 and the Great Purge, these events greatly shaped the young Gorbachev.

In 1950, he attended the Moscow State University (MSU) to study law and graduated in 1955.

On March 10, 1985, Gorbachev became the eighth and final leader of the Soviet Union and he turned out to be a great reformer.

To the West, Gorbachev was seen as a more moderate and less threatening Soviet leader.

Gorbachev is remembered for significant reforms like withdrawing Russian troops from the Soviet-Afghan War, meeting with United States president Ronald Reagan to limit nuclear weapons and his policy of glasnost (“openness”) encouraged freedom of speech.

Is Gorbachev Still Alive or Dead?

Gorbachev is alive although he is not exactly active. He lives a quiet life in a dacha outside Moscow. The majority of Russians might not like him but he is considered one of the most significant figures of the second half of the 20th century.
