Wilhelmina Beatrice Rahner (Bess Houdini) was an American stage assistant and the wife of Harry Houdini. Bess Houdini was born on January 23, 1876.

Gebhard Rahner, a cabinet manufacturer, and Balbina Rahner, a German immigrant, gave birth to Bess Houdini in Brooklyn, New York, in 1876 (before to the consolidation of New York City).

When Theo, the younger brother of Houdini, first started courting Bess, she was working at Coney Island in a song and dance group called The Floral Sisters (Theodore Hardeen).

Houdini, however, fell in love with and wed Harry, the older Houdini brother, on June 22, 1894. Before Houdini became famous as The Handcuff King, they spent a number of years working as The Houdinis. But all through his career he and Bess kept doing the Metamorphosis, their signature trick.

In addition, Bess produced the costumes for Houdini’s entire evening roadshow, cared for their assortment of pets, and collected dolls. The Houdinis never had children throughout their marriage.

Marie Hinson Blood, Bess’s niece, claimed that due to a medical ailment, Bess was unable to have children.
