Jesse Donald Knotts was an American actor and comedian. His most recognizable role is Deputy Sheriff Barney Fife on CBS television show The Andy Griffith Show. The show aired from 1960 to 1968.

Knotts was born on July 21, 1924. He attended West Virginia University and graduated in 1948 with a degree in education. Knotts started performing as a young child in church and school events. He got a break in 1956 on Steve Allen’s variety show.

Knotts got the role of Deputy Sheriff Barney Fife on The Andy Griffith Show in 1960. The role earned him five Emmy Awards for Best Supporting Actor in a Television Comedy. He left the show in 1965.

He went on to other comedy shows but he made guest appearances through the 1960s. He appeared in The Bill Cosby Show, The New Scooby Doo Movies and Three’s Company.

Is Don Knotts Still Alive or Dead?

It is reported Don Knotts struggled with anxiety and macular degeneration. Knotts died at age 81 on February 24, 2006, from pneumonia related to lung cancer.
