In the late 1980s, Roach formed a band called Altogether that played at community festivals and functions around Melbourne and in 1988 played as the opening act for Paul Kelly and the Messengers. He spent some time in institutions before being fostered by a Scottish family.
After learning of his Aboriginal family from a letter received from his sister, he left home. Suffering from alcoholism, Roach spent many years on the streets of Adelaide and Melbourne in search of his family and his identity.

Ruby Charlotte Margaret Hunter, also known as Áunty Ruby, was an Aboriginal Australian singer, songwriter, and guitarist, and the life and musical partner of Archie Roach.
Ruby Hunter was the co-author of books titled “Butcher Paper, Texta, Blackboard, and Chalk: A Songbook” and “Took the Children Away.” The other co-author of the books was her husband, Archie Roach.
Ruby Hunter and Archie Roach were recipients of the Individual Award in the Sidney Myer Performing Arts Award in 2009. Ruby won the Female Artist of the Year and the Outstanding Contribution to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Music at the Deadly Awards. Ruby Hunter was inducted into the National Indigenous Music Awards.
