Maximilian Adelbert Baer was an American professional boxer. He was the world heavyweight champion from June 14, 1934, to June 13, 1935. He is ranked No. 22 on The Ring magazine’s list of 100 greatest punchers of all time.

Baer was born on February 11, 1909 in Nebraska. His younger brother Buddy Baer was a boxer and actor. He started professional boxing in 1929.

In 1930, Baer fought with Frankie Campbell during the 5th round Frankie collapsed under Baer’s punches and had to be rushed to the hospital. Frankie died the next day, August 26, 1930. This even shook Baer to the core as he was inconsolable. Baer was charged with manslaughter but was eventually acquitted.

Baer became world heavyweight champion in 1934. However, he held the title for just 364 days, he was defeated by James J. Braddock in 1935. Baer went on and retired in 1941.

Baer tried his hands on acting in the The Prizefighter and the Lady. He went on to star in over 20 films.

Max Baer died on November 21, 1959 from a heart attack. He was just 50 years old. He was laid to rest in a garden crypt in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Sacramento.
