Jim Nabors was an American actor, singer, and comedian, widely known for his signature character, Gomer Pyle in The Andy Griffith Show. He has also appeared on The Sonny & Cher Show, Sesame Street, and The Carol Burnett Show.
Nabors was born on June 12, 1930. He attended the University of Alabama, where he began acting in skits. Due to his asthma, Nabors moved to Los Angeles after graduation. He made his television debut as “Jimmy Nabors” on the Today in Dixie show and was later discovered by Andy Griffith who hired him to play the role of Gomer Pyle in his show. He was on the show for five years.
Nabors sang “Back Home Again in Indiana” before the start of the Indianapolis 500, held annually on the Memorial Day weekend. He sang the unofficial Indiana anthem almost every year from 1972 to 2014. On January 15, 2013, Nabors married his partner of 38 years, Stan Cadwallader a month after same-sex marriage was legalized.
