In 1960, Andy starred in his show, The Andy Griffith Show. The show ran until 1968. He began his production company, Andy Griffith Enterprises in 1972.

On May 9, 2000, Andy Griffith underwent quadruple heart-bypass surgery at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia, he recovered but died on July 3, 2012.
It was confirmed, that he had a heart attack. He was buried the same day at the Griffith family cemetery, Roanoke Island.
