Jimmy Lee Swaggart is an American televangelist, gospel music recording artist, and Christian author. He sings in a baritone voice, during the 1970s and 1980s, he sold more than 17 million LP albums. Swaggart was born on March 15, 1935, to a Pentecostal preacher. In 1960, he began recording gospel music record albums and transmitting them on Christian radio stations, and a year later, he was ordained by the Assemblies of God.
In 1971, Swaggart began transmitting a weekly 30-minute telecast over various local television stations in Baton Rouge, and by 1983, over 250 television stations were broadcasting the telecast. In the late 1980s, Swaggart was accused of a sex scandal involving a prostitute, resulting in defrocking, by the Assemblies of God church. He went on to establish Jimmy Swaggart Ministries, but several sex sandals plagued him in the 1990s as well.
In 2010, Jimmy Swaggart Ministries launched a 24-hour-a-day television network entitled the Sonlife Broadcasting Network (SBN). SBN is also available 24 hours a day in the United Kingdom on SKY and DSTV for African viewers.
