After Hawking was diagnosed with ALS during his doctorate program, he sank into depression and wanted to drop out of school but he was encouraged by his doctors to continue his study. After his studies, he continued to research the singularity theorem concepts, a topic explored in his doctoral thesis.
Hawking defiled his disability to receive numerous awards for his research. In 1974, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. He was also elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the United States National Academy of Sciences.
He received the 2016 Pride of Britain Awards from then Prime Minister Theresa May and Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Obama.
Hawking married his wife Jane Wilde in 1965. The union was blessed with three children, Robert, Lucy and Timothy.

Stephen Hawking died in his home at Cambridge on March 14, 2018. He was 76 year old. He died 50 years after he was diagnosed with ALS. Hawking’s ash was buried alongside brilliant minds like Sir Isaac Newton and Charles Darwin.
