Wayne was born Marion Robert Morrison on May 26, 1907. He played football in high school and went on to attend the University of Southern California (USC), majoring in pre-law but had to drop out when he lost his football scholarship due to an injury.
This iconic actor started acting in 1926 in the silent film Bardelys the Magnificent. He went on to appear in The Dropkick, Salute, and Maker of Men. Wayne made some of his most popular films in the 1950s like Island in the Sky, The Wings of Eagles, and Jet Pilot. He worked with some of the greatest in Hollywood’s Golden age like Maureen O’Hara, Claudia Cardinale, Rita Hayworth, and Dean Martin.

John Wayne died of stomach cancer on June 11, 1979, he was 72 years old. In 1999 his grave was marked with the words, “Tomorrow is the most important thing in life. Comes into us at midnight very clean. It’s perfect when it arrives and it puts itself in our hands. It hopes we’ve learned something from yesterday.”
