Billy Milligan was an American who was the subject of a highly publicized court case in Ohio in the late 1970s. He was charged for aggravated rape and armed robbery. Milligan was the first person diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder to raise such a defense.

William Stanley Milligan was born on February 14, 1955 in Miami Beach. He was arrested several times, in 1975 for rape and armed robbery and again in 1977 for for raping three women on the Ohio State University campus.

During his psychological examination, he was diagnosed with acute schizophrenia and dissociative identity disorder. It was discovered Milligan had 24 personalities which prompted him to commit the crimes. He was committed to a series of state-run psychiatric hospitals where he stayed until 1986 when he escaped and lived under the alias (Christopher Carr) until he was recaptured.

Milligan was released from the Ohio mental health system and the Ohio courts in 1991.

Is Billy Milligan Still Alive or Dead?

After his release Billy Milligan remained unknown until December 24, 2014, when Milligan died of cancer at a nursing home in Columbus, Ohio. He was 59 years old.
