Welch was born as Jo Raquel Tejada on September 5, 1940. She always wanted to be a performer and she enrolled for ballet lessons at the age of seven, but she was told she is not physically suitable to be a ballerina.
Welch moved to Los Angeles in 1963, she started off with minor roles; A House Is Not a Home and Roustabout. She also featured on television shows. In 1966, she landed a major role in One Million Years B.C. Her promo pictures solidified her as a pin up girl and sex symbol. She soon gained international fame in the 1967 film, Bedazzled and Bandolero.
She has represented various brands like MAC Cosmetics. She also owns a brand of wigs.
